The Columbus Dispatch : It’s official: Arena Football League scraps ‘09 season

“On behalf of the Columbus Destroyers, I am disappointed we had to suspend operations but believe it is the proper decision at this time,” Destroyers partner and managing board member Jim Renacci said in a statement. “We, along with other professional sports leagues, are experiencing the worst economic times in over 30 years. As a league, we now must start to build a solid economic plan and we will begin to develop that plan in the next 24 hours

The New Shanty Towns

The New Shanty Towns – The Daily Beast

In the shadows of high-rise casinos, where gamblers blow millions of dollars in round-the-clock binges, a sprawling new neighborhood has sprung up in matter of weeks—a city of tents. Occupied mainly by people with homes in foreclosure, and people whose jobs have vanished leaving them with no savings, this tent city in downtown Reno is one of many makeshift homeless encampments that now dot the country. Nevada has one of the highest unemployment rates in the U.S., made worse by waves of new arrivals seeking work in the casinos (This week, a new Las Vegas casino received 25,000 job applications for its 1,000 available jobs.)

Frank Calls on Bush Administration to Delay Internet Gambling Regulations
Rules to take effect on January 19; Bush promised end to “midnight regulations”

Washington, DC – House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) today wrote to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Board of Governors Chairman Ben Bernanke asking them to postpone issuing regulations pursuant to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act.

Frank wrote, “I am deeply disappointed to hear that your agency is proceeding with what I consider to be unseemly haste in issuing regulations implementing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. This midnight rulemaking will tie the hands of the new Administration, burden the financial services industry at a time of economic crisis, and contradict the stated intent of the Financial Services Committee”

19 Ways to Slash Your Utility Bill – Popular Mechanics

Unplug the beer fridge

That old clunker of a refrigerator in the basement could be costing the
equivalent of 10 cases of Bud in wasted energy each year. A
refrigerator built in 1993 gobbles twice as much energy as new models.
Need more cold brew for a party? Plug in the fridge the night before.

Cost: $0 | Monthly Savings: $12.50 | Payback: Immediate

I need to make sure I turn off my beer fridge, duh.

Just stop paying your mortgage

without comments

Just stop paying your mortgage | The San Diego Union-Tribune

I think this advice is BS. Lets help destroy the economy some more by not paying your mortgage that you can pay and waste all your money on a big TV, vacation, etc to prove you don’t have the money to pay it. This is the type of BS that needs to stop. Same with the companies that paid themselves millions then go cry to congress they need bailed out. Is this the kind of welfare crap that people complain about so lets join the club and take advantage of the crisis and make it worse.

People/companies/government living well beyond their means, being greedy, and not being financially responsible created this BULLSHIT.

Bankruptcy, not bailout, is the right answer

without comments

Commentary: Bankruptcy, not bailout, is the right answer – CNN.com

Good article on why they should not bailout the banks.

Thoughtful advocates of the bailout might concede this perspective,
but they argue that a bailout is necessary to prevent economic
collapse. According to this view, lenders are not making loans, even
for worthy projects, because they cannot get capital. This view has a
grain of truth; if the bailout does not occur, more bankruptcies are
possible and credit conditions may worsen for a time.

Talk of
Armageddon, however, is ridiculous scare-mongering. If financial
institutions cannot make productive loans, a profit opportunity exists
for someone else. This might not happen instantly, but it will happen.

Further, the current credit freeze is likely due to Wall Street’s hope
of a bailout; bankers will not sell their lousy assets for 20 cents on
the dollar if the government might pay 30, 50, or 80 cents.
